When to Trust the Instrument vs Trust Your Gut

A gut feeling that a reading "seems wrong" is a legitimate, valuable signal — it's often years of pattern-matching compressed into a fast, wordless judgment. But a gut feeling is also just a hypothesis, not a conclusion. This chapter is about the fast, cheap methods for actually testing that hypothesis before deciding whether to trust the instrument or your instinct.

Cheap Verification Methods, Roughly in Order of Speed

A tap test on a tank, a sight glass, or simply opening a valve briefly to see what actually comes out are all fast, low-cost ways to check physical reality directly, independent of any electronic instrument. Cross-referencing against a SECOND, independent instrument or measurement (a different level method, a mass balance calculation, a downstream flow reading) is slightly slower but often more conclusive, since it removes reliance on your own senses being accurate.

Why "The Instrument Must Be Wrong" Is Often the Wrong First Assumption

It's tempting to distrust the instrument first, since it feels like the more likely point of failure — but a properly-maintained, correctly-calibrated transmitter is often MORE reliable than a quick visual estimate or a tap test performed under time pressure. Several of the fault stories later in this book (particularly the gas analyzer and level transmitter cases in Part 3) are specifically about instruments that were reporting correctly while the "obvious" physical assessment was actually the misleading one.

A Genuinely Useful Rule of Thumb If your gut and the instrument disagree, and you can't immediately verify which one is right, treat the DISAGREEMENT itself as the fault symptom worth investigating — rather than picking a side and proceeding. The disagreement is informative: sometimes it reveals a genuine instrument fault, sometimes it reveals a flawed mental model of what the process is actually doing, and sometimes (as several fault stories later in this book show) it reveals something more subtle than either.

Check Your Understanding

Think of a time your instinct told you a reading was wrong. Did you verify it independently before acting, or did you act directly on the instinct? If you verified it — what method did you use, and how long did it actually take compared to how long you assumed it would take? Most technicians, once they track this honestly, find that quick verification is far cheaper than the assumption "there's no time to check" suggests.
